We suggest you research the industry as thoroughly as possible via the Internet. Each of these areas features a variety of roles. Remember that there are many career prospects related to the publishing industry, including: customer services, sales, publicity, marketing, literary agent, editing, proofreading, layout and design. The South African Publishing Association (PASA) has an internship programme and also occasionally offers training of various kinds as well as providing information on the local industry and on individual publishers. An organisation such as the Professional Editors Group (PEG) also offers various courses on editing and proofreading. Several South African universities offer postgraduate publishing courses and degrees. How does one get involved with the publishing industry? ![]() Any and all writing – and any and all reading – help to develop you as a writer. But short stories do offer the opportunity to hone your writing craft and as a result they might be a valuable exercise to work on. The short story is an art form in and of itself it’s not really a way to ‘practice’ writing a novel or longer piece of work. Is it a good idea to enter short story competitions to build up your portfolio of work? You can also work with an editor not aligned to a specific publishing house to develop and polish your manuscript. Several South African universities offer Creative Writing programmes at a post-graduate level. Being part of a writing group that offers input and constructive criticism on your work is another option.
